I am a senior at Campbell high school and when I learned that my class would have the chance to learn about anything we wanted once a week I was excited. After some thought I discovered it was not as easy as I believed it would be to choose my genius hour subject and it took a while to decide what I did want to learn.
I eventually decided to research crossbred animals and hybrid fruits. Some examples of hybrid animals would be the liger or tigon these are animals that are bred by two different species. There are also vegetables and fruits that are hybrid but this is usually caused by human interference.
The First day we had to begin working on our project I searched different animals that have been crossbred and the results, the Liger is the child of a male lion and a female tiger, it grows to be bigger than any of its parents but because it is a mix between two different species it suffers from infertility and cannot reproduce. Genetic disorders are present in lots of crossbred species the ligon is made when a female lion and male tiger mate but is much rarer because they usually die in their mother's womb.
The Second day I decided to research other animals to see if there were always negative effects or genetic disorders and discover that it is usually common for crossbreed to have problems and lots of them are unable to reproduce.
On day 3 i decided to focus more on hybrid fruits. I learned the difference between genetically modified plants and hybrid fruits. Genetically modified plants are made in labs and can have genes from many different species. Hybridization is done in nature and can be controlled by farmers who have a plant pollinate on another that is different.
On day 4 i focused on the negatives of crossbreeding a species. It is difficult to tell what temperament the animal will have and how it will act. Crossbreeding can also lead to more risk at birth for female animal. The tigon is a crossbreed of a female lion and male tiger that tends to die at birth and if it does survive past birth it can be prone to getting cancer.
On day 5 i researched the advantages of crossbreeding a species with another. Crossbreeding can create a exotic looking animal and that is why some people like to do it. It can create certain features that a person is not able to get in other species.
On day 6 I decided to look up pictures of hybrid fruits and animals their are some at the top of the page, It is understandable why people want to breed such animals but i do not believe they think about how the animal can suffer and the pain it may have to go through.
On day 7 i learned why crossbred animals can suffer from so many diseases and have so many genetic problems. Though the animals being crossbred may have the same amount of chromosomes they are not the same size and this can lead to genetic defects.
On day 8 i watched some videos about hybrid fruit to see if it can be done at home and it can be but it seemed a little difficult to me. I learned about trees that can produce 40 different types of fruit.

On day 9 i began to work on my presentation for my genius hour and nearly finished it.
On day 10 i finished my genius hour project and began to rehearse how i will present it.
